Race to the finish
So there I am, idly scrolling through Twitter when I see something that interests me. I got my bid in quickly...

...and a few messages later 27Gb of video footage was being sent to me from the USA. It took a while to arrive...
Primitive Race are a US-based supergroup created by bassist, impresario and Lords Of Acid manager/executive producer Chris Kniker and featuring Chuck Mosley (Faith No More), Dale Crover (Melvins, Nirvana) and Mark Thwaite (Spear Of Destiny, The Mission). The track is "Turn It Up" remixed by Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Fantomas, Suicidal Tendencies, Misfits).
The video was shot in the States by Dusters/Girl Is Not A 4 Letter Word to commemorate the release of Primitive Race's album of remixes of their album "Soul Pretender", entitled "Cranial Matter". Remix artists include Pop Will Eat Itself, Paul Leary (Butthole Surfers) and Sketenigs.
The video had a tight deadline as it was to be released to promote the global release of the album so I set to work straight away and got a cut together based on Chris's specifications. Dusters/GNA4LW shot some great footage of two female skateboarders performing various tricks which form the basis of the video.
Chris wanted the video to have a 70s b-movie retro look, so the footage was cut together in Adobe Premiere CC and treated to a Fuji/Kodak film stock colour scheme using the Lumetri colour engine. Finally an 8mm film grain overlay was applied and trippy-looking effects pulled in from Adobe After Effects.
Bar a few changes to the initial edit, Chris and I arrived at a cut that worked well in the allotted time. The video is now online and can be seen here:
Vocalist Chuck Mosley sadly passed away shortly after the original release of "Soul Pretender"and "Cranial Matter" was conceived in order to honour his memory. I'm listening to it as I type and I can say without doubt that it is amazing, also that I am immensely proud to have been a very small part in its release.
"Cranial Matter" is available from iTunes, Amazon and Bandcamp.
